Vehicles:

We recommend making use of a 10 Seater Open Game viewing vehicle which offer elevated views and offers fantastic photographic opportunities...one also gets to experience the smells and sounds of the bush.  These vehicles are equipped with two way radios and the Rangers are constantly in contact with one another to increase your chances of seeing the elusive "Big 5"!!!

For those who prefer not to be exposed to the elements, a Closed air-conditioned vehicle can be used...no group too small or too large!!!

A typical day in the Kruger National Park:

A typical day in the Kruger National Park starts just before dawn...as soon as the entrance/restcamps gates openFor guests staying overnight the day will start with a complimentary cup of coffee/tea and "rusks" (eaten by dunking into a hot beverage)

The first game drive of the day normally lasts 3 Hours, after which there is a breakfast stop at either one of the picnic spots or a restcamp within the Kruger National Park.  Breakfast will either be at the restaurant, cafeteria and/or prepared by your Ranger.

Another 3 Hour game drive through a different area will take you up to lunchtime - which is an own expense meal at one of the picnic spots or a restcamp.

Guests staying overnight in the Kruger National Park have the opportunity of joining the Sunset Safari (night drive – 3 Hours) offered by the Kruger National Park.  Normal visitors have to exit the Kruger National Park or be back in the restcamp by sunset - the Kruger National Park offers guests the opportunity to search for some of the nocturnal animals and birds on this activity.

Should you decide to participate in this activity your Ranger will head back to camp after lunch to allow you time for a short siesta before heading off again.  It has to be said that this is a very popular activity and that it is recommended to book well in advance, let us make the arrangements for you prior to your arrival

Guests not joining the Kruger National Park Sunset drive will continue with their game drive until sunset, at which time they will return to camp to freshen up before dinner.

Another optional extra activity on offer by the Kruger National Park for visitors staying overnight in one of the restcamps, is a 3 Hour morning walk with an armed Ranger.  The activity starts early morning with a short ride to a quiet spot from where you continue on foot.  Guests joining this activity will miss out on their first game drive, but will be collected after breakfast and continue with the normal program as set out above...book early to avoid disappointment!!!

Accommodation in the Kruger National Park:

Standard "rondawels" (round buildings with thatched roofs - mosquito proof!!!) in one of the Kruger National Park restcamps is our preferred type of accommodation we utilize for overnight packages in the Kruger National Park

These units are all en-suite (WC and shower), with air-conditioning, verandah (tables and chairs), as well as a fridge and outside barbeque area.

Each restcamp also caters for campers and for the adventurous we can arrange a mobile tented camp to be set up - you don't need to bring a thing!!!

Meals in the Kruger National Park:

All of the restcamps in the Kruger National Park have a restaurant, cafeteria and curio shop to cater for visitors.  Meals can either be enjoyed in the restaurant/cafeteria complex and/or your Ranger can prepare a typical South African "braaivleis" (barbeque dinner prepared on open fire) for you under the stars, complete with recommended South African wines to compliment your meal...

MPUMALANGA TOURS:
KNP (Interesting facts):

The world-renowned Kruger National Park offers a wildlife experience second to none. At nearly 2 million hectares, it is the largest game reserve in South Africa, stretching 350km along the Mozambican border and is, on average, 60km wide. It is unrivalled in its diversity of species and is a recognised leader in environmental management techniques and policies.

The Limpopo is the park’s northern-most river and the Crocodile forms it southern boundary, while the Sabie, Letaba, Olifants and Luvuvhu rivers provide the park’s interior with water. There are some seasonal rivers like the Shisa and Timbavati, which are usually dry during winter.

The park tends to be mostly grasslands, known in South Africa as bushveld, and woodlands (savannah), with occasional rocky outcrops. The Kruger National Park falls within a malaria area and all necessary precautions should be taken. Consult your general practitioner on medication before planning a visit.

Access to the Kruger National Park is easy by road or air. The Kruger Mpumlanga International Airport at Nelspruit has daily flights from Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town.

Interesting Facts

  • In 1869, a ‘gold rush’ exploded in the region causing the number of game to decrease dramatically due to hunting and trading of animal horns and skins.
  • In 1884, President Paul Kruger proposed that boundaries in the region be defined as game reserves to protect the flora and fauna, but his revolutionary vision was met with much resistance.
  • The park was first proclaimed in 1898 as the Sabie Game Reserve and the area between the Sabie and Crocodile Rivers was set aside as official reserves.
  • The Scottish-born James Stevenson-Hamilton was appointed the park’s first warden in 1902. Many accounts of the park’s early days can be found in the Stevenson-Hamilton Memorial Library.
  • In 1926 the National Parks Act was proclaimed and with it the merging of the Sabie and Shingwedzi Games Reserves into the Kruger National Park.

Kruger is one of the premier game-watching destinations in the world. Approximately 145 mammal species occur in the park. It is possible to see all the classical African big game, including elephant, black and white rhino, hippopotamus, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, warthog and many antelope species. Large carnivores include lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog and spotted hyena.

Rainfall

The rainy season of the park starts approximately September and lasts until March or April followed by a period of little or no rainfall. About 80% of the precipitation occurs in the form of quick thundershowers and is very erratic.

The annual rainfall around Pretoriuskop in the south is about 760 mm and in the central area the rainfall is considerably lower reaching roughly 540 mm per year. At Punda Maria in the North it rises again to 640 mm per annum whilst in the Pafuri in the north east it can be as low as 210 mm per year.

Temperatures

The average daily maximum temperature during the month of January is 30° C and 23°C during July. Extreme maximum temperatures can be 47°C for January and 35°C for July.

The average night temperature during January is 18° C and 8°. Extreme minimum temperatures can fall to 7°C in January and -4°C in July. Occasional low frost may occur in low-lying areas.
